Wisconsin’s electric rates did not change on October 1, 2026. The Public Service Commission of Wisconsin (PSC) usually sets rates for two calendar years at a time, so changes arrive in January. The 2026 increases are already in bills, and 2027 is partly decided.
This article covers the five large investor-owned utilities. It does not cover municipal utilities or cooperatives.

Figures are average residential impacts reported by Wisconsin Public Radio. The 2027 figures for Alliant, Madison Gas and Electric and Xcel were reported without saying whether they are measured from 2025 or from 2026.
We Energies and Wisconsin Public Service
Both are owned by WEC Energy Group. On November 7, 2024, the PSC approved:
- We Energies: $7.62 a month in 2025 and $9.73 in 2026 for an average residential customer.
- Wisconsin Public Service: $7.11 a month in 2025 and $5.04 in 2026.
- Return on equity: held at 9.8%. Both had asked for 10%.
New requests. The two utilities have asked for almost $500 million more in electric revenue over 2027 and 2028:
- We Energies: 4.7% in 2027 (about $13 a month) and 4.5% in 2028 (about $8 to $9).
- Wisconsin Public Service: 6.3% in 2027 (about $11 a month) and 3.5% in 2028 (about $5 to $5.50).
Wisconsin Public Radio reported that We Energies had the third-highest residential electric rates among Midwest investor-owned utilities in 2025.
Alliant, Madison Gas and Electric, and Xcel
The PSC approved 2026 and 2027 rates for these three in November 2025. Settlements cut the electric requests by $57.8 million for Alliant, $28.5 million for Madison Gas and Electric and $24.6 million for Xcel.
What This Means for Homeowners With Solar
We did not verify each utility’s current solar buyback tariff for this article. In Wisconsin these are set utility by utility in rate cases, so ask yours for the current tariff sheet and check whether the pending 2027 cases propose changes.
Our solar payback guide shows how the retail rate and the export credit change the math.
What to Check on Your Bill
- The fixed daily or monthly customer charge.
- The energy charge, and whether you are on a time-of-use plan.
- Your January 2027 bill insert, which will show the next change.
For help sorting the lines on your bill, see our guide to reading your electric bill.
What Happens Next
The PSC typically decides rate cases late in the year for rates starting in January. Decisions on the We Energies and Wisconsin Public Service requests would be expected before January 2027. We did not confirm a date.
Limitations
All figures are average residential impacts from Wisconsin Public Radio, not tariff rates, and each utility defines an average customer differently. We did not open PSC dockets or confirm the status of the pending 2027 cases after the requests were filed.
