## How it is calculated

- **Price:** EIA, Electric Power Monthly, [Table 5.6.A](https://www.eia.gov/electricity/monthly/epm_table_grapher.php?t=epmt_5_6_a), residential average price in cents per kWh. The data month and release date are on our [Rates by State](/rates-by-state/) page. Values are preliminary estimates.
- **Rank:** states sorted from highest to lowest price; 1 is the highest.
- **Estimated bill:** monthly kWh × price ÷ 100. Example: 900 kWh × 15.38¢ ÷ 100 = $138.42.

## Limits

Statewide averages hide large differences between utilities, rate plans and seasons. Use this to compare states, then check your own bill. ## Frequently asked questions

### What is the average electricity rate in my state?

Choose your state above. The lookup shows EIA's residential average price for the latest month on the site, the change from a year earlier, and how the state compares with the U.S. average. It is a statewide average, so your utility's rate can differ.

### Is this my utility's rate?

No. EIA divides total residential revenue by kWh sold across every utility in the state, so the figure includes fixed monthly charges and is not a tariff rate. Your bill and your utility's rate schedule are the authoritative sources.

### How is the estimated bill calculated?

Monthly kWh × the state's average price in cents ÷ 100. It is a rough guide: taxes, seasonal rates, tiers and time-of-use pricing are not modeled.
